Upon arrival in Kyoto, you’ll immediately feel the contrast between the bustling modernity of Tokyo and the serene beauty of Kyoto’s ancient traditions. Kyoto, known as the city of a thousand temples, is a place where history and culture live and breathe.

Your first stop is the Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates that wind their way up the mountainside. As you walk through the gates, you’ll feel a sense of peace and reverence a timeless experience that connects you to Japan’s spiritual traditions. The path is lined with moss-covered stones and ancient trees, creating a tranquil atmosphere perfect for reflection.

Your day begins in the charming town of Takayama, nestled in the Japanese Alps, where the air is fresh, and the streets are lined with history. Today, you’ll step back in time as you explore the beautifully preserved Old Town, which has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

As you wander through the narrow lanes, you’ll be transported to the Edo period, with wooden merchant houses, traditional storefronts, and picturesque tea houses lining the streets. The buildings, many dating back to the 17th century, are an excellent example of how Japan’s old traditions have been carefully preserved.

One of the highlights of the day is a visit to the Takayama Jinya, a historic government building that once served as the headquarters of the region’s local government during the Edo period. As you explore its spacious rooms and beautiful garden, you’ll learn about the important role Takayama played during that time. The tatami-matted rooms and wooden beams will make you feel like you’ve stepped into the past.

If you’re a fan of traditional sweets, stop by one of the sweet shops to try some of the town’s famous confections, such as takayama manju.

For lunch, you’ll have the chance to try Hida beef — renowned for its marbled texture and rich flavor — served in various forms, from sukiyaki to yakiniku (grilled), or perhaps as a delicious steak.

After lunch, enjoy some free time to wander through the streets at your own pace, taking in the peaceful ambiance of this historical town. Takayama is the perfect place to slow down and reflect on the simplicity and beauty of traditional Japan.

Your day concludes with a visit to the Hida Folk Village, a lovely open-air museum showcasing traditional thatched-roof houses and artifacts that give you a glimpse into the life of Japan’s rural past. These unique houses have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upon arriving in Shirakawago, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into a time capsule. The houses are built in a way that allows them to withstand heavy snowfall in the winter and provide warmth inside. You’ll have time to wander the village, cross bridges over tranquil streams, and admire the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Don’t miss the chance to visit a few of these traditional houses, now functioning as museums, where you can learn about the lifestyle of the people who once lived there.

Day 9: Kanazawa City Tour

Kanazawa

Your first stop is Kenroku-en Garden, one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan. As you step through the garden gates, you’re greeted with a breathtaking scene: a serene pond surrounded by blooming cherry blossoms. The sound of nature and the gentle breeze make every step feel like walking into a painting. Beneath the towering trees, you pause to reflect, feeling as though you’ve entered a world outside of time, where the beauty of nature remains timeless.

After soaking in the tranquility of the garden, you continue your journey to Kanazawa Castle. Standing tall on a hill, the castle tells the story of a past filled with power and struggle. You admire the grand gates and the stone walls that surround the castle, sensing the strength of history in the air. Walking around the castle grounds, you take in the panoramic views of Kanazawa, imagining what life might have been like here centuries ago.

From the castle, you make your way to Higashi Chaya District, a historic geisha district filled with old-world charm. Here, centuries-old wooden houses stand gracefully, and narrow winding streets lead you to hidden corners brimming with stories. You enter one of the traditional tea houses, where the fragrant aroma of tea and the sound of traditional music soothe your mind. You feel as if you’ve stepped back in time, experiencing the life of the geishas and maikos who once graced this area, surrounded by an enchanting and magical atmosphere.

As you continue, hunger starts to set in, and you head to Omicho Market, a bustling marketplace known for its fresh seafood. The moment you arrive, the smell of fresh fish and seafood fills the air, tempting your senses. You try a bowl of Kaisen-don, rice topped with the freshest seafood, each bite tasting like the sea itself. It’s a true taste of Kanazawa’s coastal richness.

By the afternoon, you make your way to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. Inside, the modern design and the contemporary art collection greet you in a new way. One of the most striking pieces is “Open Sky,” an installation that lets visitors walk beneath the open sky, even though they are inside a building. You feel a sense of freedom, as if space and time have stopped, giving room for imagination to flourish.

As the day winds down, you visit the Kanazawa History and Cultural Museum. Here, you find a variety of artifacts that show how the people of Kanazawa lived throughout history. December 12, 2024

Good evening,

My family and I are very pleased with our experience. There were several highly recommended places, all of which were wonderful.

The driver, Akira-san, and especially Mr. Kim, were exceptionally kind and thoughtful. Even though we couldn’t speak Japanese, they were very caring. To our surprise, Mr. Kim could speak Korean, which I can as well, so communication was seamless.

The driver provided many recommendations, even when the weather was unpredictable. We had so much fun throughout this trip. There was a particularly bad snowstorm on our way to Noboribetsu, but it turned into an unforgettable memory.

Thank you for the excellent preparation and for responding quickly to questions, such as regarding luggage arrangements.

In the future, if we explore another area of Japan, we will definitely come back.

Thank you! 😊
